Converting in only three steps
The DJVU (pronounced Déjà-Vu) format is a file format that was developed specifically for scanned documents. It can compress scans much more efficiently than PDF, meaning that a 100-page magazine that would be 50 MB in PDF format can often be reduced to less than 10 MB. This is often quite practical, but there is a catch, because only a few software programmes can open DjVu files directly. DjVu uses various technologies for this, but in particular the JB2 algorithm is used for text. This algorithm can reuse patterns that have already been seen, thus saving storage space. This explains how the name (Déjà-Vu, meaning "already seen") reflects how it actually works.
Nowadays, DjVu is mostly found in digitised books, e.g. from libraries. Technical manuals, old magazines and scientific papers are also often provided in this format. The files are often somewhat older, as DjVu developed a kind of "hype" in the early 2000s.
Why convert DjVu to PDF?
No current operating system, neither Windows nor macOS, and no modern smartphones can handle the DjVu format without additional software. Storage space is also no longer as scarce as it was more than 20 years ago. Therefore, converting DjVu to PDF today offers almost nothing but advantages: PDF files can be used much more flexibly without installation. With file-converter-online.com, the conversion can be done easily online and without any loss of quality.
